Description

Enterobacter sakazakii has been detected in commercially manufactured powdered infant formula. The bacterium can cause neonatal septicemia and meningitis and has been associated with necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates. Because powdered infant formula contains nutrients that can potentially support the growth of E. sakazakii, appropriate temperature control and hygiene of reconstituted formula are critical to inhibiting the growth of bacteria and minimizing the risk of illness.
