Description
Cough is a common symptom of upper respiratory infections, and it is often the one cold symptom that keeps children (and their parents) up at night. Cough medicines containing "DM" (dextromethorphan) are widely available without a prescription and they are widely used, even though they're not recommended by many pediatric experts. Three years ago, researchers at Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania, showed that neither DM nor a commonly used antihistamine (sold as Benadryl and other brands) was any better than a placebo when it came to reducing cough, and neither the parents' sleep nor the child's sleep was better when the child received medication compared to the placebo.
