Partridge and Rickman analyze socioeconomic and demographic factors related to poverty rates (and changes therein) for a variety of geographic areas in the United States. The book begins with a discussion of poverty at the national level, and then logically proceeds to break down the units of analysis into smaller geographic areas: states, counties, and metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Considerable attention is paid to changes in regional poverty rates during the 1990s. Case studies are also included, as well as a discussion on poverty in rural areas. Partridge and Rickman conclude with a series of policy recommendations.
