About 90 people attended the fourth annual Product Authentication & Brand Security Conference (PABS North America) held in Washington, DC in early October. The event, which was put on by AWA Alexander Watson Associates and the Brand Protection Alliance (BPA), covered counterfeiting and intellectual property theft and offered information about current technology designed to protect brands.
Attendees were first introduced to the depth of intellectual property theft and counterfeiting and then shown ways to combat it. Lynn Crutchfield, chairman of the BPA and president of Acucote Inc., a company that provides papers and films for self-adhesive labeling applications, welcomed the group and gave an overview of intellectual property theft.
The keynote speaker at the event was Elaine Marshall, secretary of state of North Carolina. She discussed the strides her state has made in the area of enforcement of intellectual property theft. She talked about the dedicated law enforcement unit North Carolina has for business crimes and how it has helped protect brand owners.
