Description
In a national television speech, President George W. Bush on Sept. 13 said 5,700 US troops would be pulled from Iraq by end-2007, starting with a Marine unit later this month. The 30,000 additional US troops sent to Iraq this year could be withdrawn by mid-2008 if conditions on the ground permit. Thus he endorsed the recommendations of the top US commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, presented to Congress on Sept. 10. But this has added heat to the debate between Democrats and Republicans over the surge and its outcome, although on Sept. 14 Defence Secretary Robert Gates said US troops by early 2009 will have been reduced to about 100,000.
