As both a specialty framer and professional photographer, Fran Gray, MCPF, combines knowledge, experience, and expertise from two industries into one. The photography and flaming industries don't often overlap beyond a business relationship; but Gray, by immersing herself into both ventures, is finding great benefits.
Framing state of mind
Gray, owner of Roney's Creative Picture Framing (www.roneysframes.com), Florence, S.C., worked for 14 years as a research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1995, Gray noticed an ad for a local frame shop up for sale, owned by Jack and Olwen Roney, a couple about to retire after establishing the business in 1970.
Gray "had always done hands-on crafts and worked with stained glass," she says, so her interest was heightened in the crafty frame designs of the popular framing shop. She set up an appointment to view the store, made an offer, and signed papers declaring her ownership in less than two weeks.
