Mac Hardaway, of Amazon Environmental, Inc., doesn't hesitate to admit that paint recycling won't be found on many top 10 lists of "most exciting topics to discuss at a party." For Amazon Environmental and other paint recycling companies, however, a number of initiatives that have been introduced in the last year or so are currently undergoing implementation and development, which is creating excited talk and hope for growth in this niche segment of the paint and coatings industry.
Recycling of unwanted paint provides many positives to the consumer, the paint manufacturer, and the environment. By recycling unused paint, the amount of post-consumer paint sent for disposal is reduced and therefore the environmental impact of burying or burning that quantity of material is eliminated. The cost of recycled paint is often half that of virgin material, and communities often can reduce costs associated with sending paint to specialized waste facilities. Paint companies can use the lower cost, post-consumer paint as a raw material, and when they participate in recycling programs they can promote these environmental stewardship activities to future customers.
