Paint can be applied to numerous types of surfaces--wood, metal, plaster, sheet rock, plastic, concrete. These are all common materials that receive coatings for protective and aesthetic effects. Grass does not immediately come to mind as a coating surface, yet it is often painted on a regular basis. Team emblems and field lines in sports stadiums, lawn decorations, and cosmetic touches to golf courses are some examples.

Before sporting events became such big business, athletic field maintenance did not require any expertise other than the ability to push a lawn mower and lay out chalk lines. "Chalk was problematic, though," notes David Simmoms, plant manager for World Class Athletic Surfaces. "It was unsafe and it didn't look very good." Using paint for the lines on the field turf resolved both issues.
