As the largest wholesale photofinisher in the United States, Qualex Inc. has been in the forefront of the mass market for nearly 20 years. With its broad distribution network and six plants in North America, the Durham, N.C.-based company services nearly 30,000 retail locations. Qualex is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eastman Kodak Co., based in Rochester, N.Y.
Like most companies dependent on the analog film business, Qualex has had to make adjustments to make headway into the wide world of digital products and services. Earlier this year, the company bought the assets of photo gift maker PhotoTLC, Petaluma, Calif., and, most recently, purchased its own digital press.
In a visit to the site of the digital press installation in Allentown, Pa., Qualex President Mark J. DeSimone explains how Qualex has changed its thinking due to real business issues, including rapidly declining film volumes and demand for an ever-increasing array of digital services.
