SUMMARY: TEENS ARE BUSY PEOPLE, BUT MANY OF THEM ARE OVERWHELMED BY THEIR SCHEDULES. THIS ARTICLE, BASED ON INTERVIEWS WITH STUDENTS AND EXPERTS, OFFERS ADVICE FOR TEENS WHO WANT TO STAY ACTIVE, BUT NEED HELP STRIKING A HEALTHY BALANCE.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

* Many teenagers wind up overscheduled because they have a hard time saying no to anything that sounds fun. Have you ever felt that way? How do you decide what to say yes to and what to turn down?

* The article advises readers to examine their relationships with technology. Do you need to do that? Have you ever felt too tied to your cell phone or computer?

* Have your parents ever put pressure on you to do an activity that you felt you didn't have time for? What did you do?

* Do you think it is ever good to spend time daydreaming and not accomplishing anything? Why or why not? Should you have down time in your schedule?

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

Teaching point: This interviewing activity will help students build perspective about their activities and schedules. Have each student make a rough outline of his or her weekly schedule, being sure to include school, homework, and other possible activities like a job, playing on a sports team, or doing another type of activity like playing music. Then tell them to interview a parent or another adult about what the interviewee's schedule was like when he or she was the student's age. After the interviews are complete, have a class discussion about whether this generation's teens are busier than teens in the past.
