Mujeres Unidas Contra el SIDA (Women United Against AIDS) was started in 1994 in San Antonio, Texas by Yolanda Rodriguez-Escobar. Yolanda had been a medical social worker for a county clinic. Many women brought their brothers, sons or partners to the clinic or came for their own HIV care. Yolanda noticed a lack of support groups for Latinas, so she began one. On the first night of the support group, four women came, two affected and two infected with HIV.

"Women were scared about coming, I knew it was going to be difficult to bring women together, because of stigma and fear. Especially back then, women's voices were not heard."
