The House of Representatives has approved six bills, including authorization to extend VA medical, hospital and nursing home care for combat veterans for up to five years after discharge. Current law provides two years of free care to veterans who served in combat during or after the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The bill (H.R. 612), sponsored by House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-Calif.), also would provide three years of eligibility for combat veterans who were discharged between 1998 and 2002 but never received a VA disability rating.

"The bill will allow more veterans to receive needed treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental and physical health conditions that may not be evident immediately following a veteran's discharge from service," said National Legislative Director Joseph A. Violante.
