Description

Out of service (OTS) is a fairly common phrase in NOTAMs. Sometimes a device is taken out of service for maintenance, and the NOTAM is issued in advance with a specified timeframe for being down. Other times something takes the afternoon off without warning and the NOTAM is "until further notice" (UFN).

Normally when a NAVAID signal goes out of tolerance, sensors detect the anomaly and automatically shut the station off. The theory is that no signal is better than a misleading one. An alarm rings somewhere (FSS, tower, etc.) to alert ATC and the maintenance people that a NAVAID has resigned from Federal service.
