Sterling Ruby, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles
Sterling Ruby is a cool name, a drag queen' name, a British spy's name. I don't know him, and hadn't heard of him before I saw his show at Marc Foxx. That doesn't matter because his show, Interior Designer, which looks at sexuality, namely "transgendered people", and flirts with theoretical schizophrenia, requires only sympathy for his observations and the art he makes.
It wouldn't change the show to know that he was a black Jewish post op tyranny hot for chubby sex. The show's beauty, its material expertise, and its understanding of visual pleasure and contemporary art are absolutely seductive. If that isn't enough, a fairy dust layer of theory mystifies its abject flair. I enjoyed the show.
