Dean Franco's comparative study offers a very useful contribution to the literature of national identity, as well as to the expanding field of ethnic and American studies. This is a thoroughly engaging work that struggles most fruitfully with issues such as the "pastness/presentness of trauma" and the "authentic ethnic identity."
