A popular conception of research is of the scholar hunched over old documents in a darkened room, trying to discern their meaning and import. But before a scholar can reach that stage, there has to be a lot of preparatory work to ascertain what records were created and where they are. This can be thought of as bibliographical research, since much of what a scholar wants to do is to get some kind of bibliographic citation to an item of information. Correctly identifying something is at least 40 percent of the research process.
