Description: Alpha Natural Resources Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in November 2004, and completed its initial public offering in February 2005. The company primarily produces, processes and sells steam and metallurgical coal, and it also sells coal produced by others, the majority of which it processes and/or blends with coal produced from its mines prior to resale. It has eight regional business units: Paramont and Dickerson-Russell in Virginia; Kingwood, Brooks Run North and Brooks Run South in West Virginia; AMFIRE in Pennsylvania; Enterprise in Kentucky; and Callaway/Cobra in West Virginia/Virginia. As of December 2008, these regional units were supported by 34 active underground mines, 27 active surface mines and 11 preparation plants located throughout Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, as well as a road construction business in West Virginia and Virginia. In 2004, the company acquired substantially Moravian Run Reclamation Company Inc., including surface mines, a coal preparation plant and railroad loading facility located in Pennsylvania and an adjacent coal refuse disposal site. In October 2005, it acquired the Nicewonder Coal Group's coal reserves and operations in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia In May 2006, the company acquired coal mining operations in Kentucky from Progress Fuels Corporation.
