Description: Burger King Holdings Inc. was founded in 1954 when James McLamore and David Edgerton opened the first Burger King in Miami, Florida. The company introduced the Whopper sandwich in 1957, opened its first international restaurant in the Bahamas in 1966 and introduced drive-thru service in 1975. It incorporated in Delaware on July 23, 2002 and began trading on the NYSE in May 2006. Burger King is a fast food hamburger restaurant serving flame-broiled hamburgers, chicken and other specialty sandwiches, french fries, soft drinks and other food items. The company generates revenue through retail sales at restaurants, franchise royalties and fees, and property income from restaurants leased or subleased to franchisees. As of June 30, 2008, approximately 90% of the 11,565 restaurants were franchised in 71 countries. Of these restaurants, 7,207 were located in the United States and 4,358 were located in international markets. In 1967, Mr. McLamore and Mr. Edgerton sold Burger King to Minneapolis-based The Pillsbury Company. The Pillsbury Company was purchased by Grand Metropolitan, which merged with Guinness to form Diageo. In December 2002, the company was acquired by private equity funds controlled by TPG Capital, Bain Capital Partners and the Goldman Sachs Funds. More
