Description: Hilltop Holdings Inc. was formed in 1998 under the name Affordable Residential Communities Inc. as a Maryland corporation that elected to be taxed as a real estate investment trust (REIT). On February 18, 2004, the Dallas-based company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2006, Hilltop Holdings revoked its election as a REIT for U.S. federal income tax purposes. Until 2007, the company primarily engaged in the acquisition, renovation, repositioning and operation of all-age manufactured home communities, the retail sale and financing of manufactured homes, the rental of manufactured homes and other related businesses, including acting as agent in the sale of homeowners' insurance and related products, to residents and prospective residents of those communities. In January 2007, Hilltop Holdings acquired NLASCO, which was incorporated in Delaware in 2000, but its origins trace back to 1948. Through this wholly-owned property and casualty insurance holding company, Hilltop Holdings provides fire and homeowners insurance to low value dwellings and manufactured homes primarily in Texas and other areas of the south, southeastern and southwestern United States.
