Description: Peabody Energy Corporation was founded in 1883, as Peabody, Daniels and Company, a retail coal supplier. It entered the mining business in 1888, as Peabody and Co. In 1926, Peabody Coal Company was listed on the Chicago Stock Exchange and, beginning in 1949, on the New York Stock Exchange. In April, 2001, the company's name became Peabody Energy Corporation; and, in May, 2001, it made an initial public offering of common stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BTU. Peabody conducts business through three mining operating segments - Western U.S. mining, Midwestern U.S. mining, and Australian mining; as well as its trading and brokerage operations segment. As of late 2008, the company had majority interests in 30 coal mines in the U.S. and Australia and minority interest in one Venezuelan mine; its international trading group had locations in England, Australia and China. Historically, in 1955, Peabody Coal Company merged with Sinclair Coal Company. In 1968, Peabody Coal Company was acquired by Kennecott Copper Company and then sold to Peabody Holding Company in 1977. In 1990, Hanson PLC, acquired Peabody Holding Company. In 1998, Lehman Brothers Merchant Banking Partners II L.P. and affiliates purchased Peabody Holding Company and its affiliates. Peabody expanded into Australia, by acquiring coal operations from RAG Coal International AG in 2004, and Excel Coal Limited in 2006. More
