Description: Belk Inc. began as a small bargain store in May 1888, in Monroe, North Carolina. The company was first named New York Racket by its founder, William Henry Belk. Belk was incorporated in Delaware in 1997. It is the largest privately owned department store in the United States. The company sells top national brands in fashion apparel, shoes and accessories for women, men and children, as well as cosmetics, home furnishings, housewares, fine jewelry, gifts and other merchandise. As of the end of fiscal year 2008, Belk operated 303 retail department stores in 16 states and 27 hair styling salons in various store locations, 18 of which also offer spa services. In 2005, Belk acquired Proffitt's/McRae's and Parisian department stores from Saks Incorporated. With its acquisition of Migerobe, Inc. in fiscal year 2007, the company established its own fine jewelry business. In addition to carrying top name brands, Belk also offers private brands such as Kim Rogers, Madison Studio, Madison, J. Khaki, Meeting Street, Saddlebred, Home Accents, W.H. Belk, Red Camel and Biltmore Estate For Your Home.
