Founded in 1921 by John and Walter Wegman with the purchase of Seel Grocery Co., and incorporated in 1931, their operations today employ 25,000 people in approximately 60 stores located in Rochester and Buffalo, New York as well as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Since the purchase of their first store, the Wegmans were innovative and introduced new concepts into their stores. In 1930, they opened a 20,000 square foot store in Rochester, New York which featured a 300 seat cafeteria. In 1932 they introduced refrigerated display windows and vaporized water sprays to keep produce fresh. In 1949 they converted their stores to a self-service format. They were also one of the first stores in the country to use laser scanning to read the UPC labels printed on their products. Results for fiscal year ended December 1998 report sales of $2,450.0 million, representing an increase of 4.7 percent over the previous year's sales. Top competitors include Ahold USA, A&P, and Penn Traffic.
