Description: Finance: The European Investment Bank (EIB) was established in 1958 as part of the decision to create a European Economic Community. Its aims are to contribute to the steady and balanced development of the European Union by providing loans for capital investment projects furthering Union policy objectives. Outside the European Union, the EIB participates in the implementation of the Union's development policy through long-term loans from own resources or subordinated loans and risk capital from EU or Member States' budgetary funds in some 150 non-EU countries. The Bank is owned by the Member States of the European Union who have subscribed to the Bank's capital. Major activities are the financing of capital investment projects including European transport and telecommunications networks, environmental protection, rational use of energy and development of energy resources, increasing the competitiveness of the European Union's industry, support for the activities of small and medium sized enterprises, health and education investment and investment to encourage the establishment of a European knowledge based economy. While most of its lending is for projects located within the EU, the EIB also participates in the implementation of the Union's development policy in countries outside the European Union; in the Mediterranean region, in 71 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, in South Africa, in the Accession Countries and in Latin America and Asia
