Millennium Chemicals produces specialty chemicals for use in industry, paint, perfume, and flavorings. The company, controlled by investment firm Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss, operates in four divisions. Millennium Specialty Chemicals is the largest producer of fragrances and flavors derived from turpentine, marketing more than 250 terpene specialty chemicals for use in food, fragrances, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. The leading U.S. producer of inorganic cadmium pigments, used in artists' colors, plastics, and coatings, Millennium Specialty also produces silica gels. Millennium Inorganic Chemicals is the second-largest producer of titanium dioxide in the world; the division sells titanium products to the plastics and paper industries. Millennium Petrochemicals produces acetic acid, vinyl acetate monomer, and methanol. Headquartered in Red Bank, New Jersey, Millennium Chemicals operates facilities on five continents. The company also owns about one-third of Equistar Chemicals, a company producing ethylene, propylene, and polyethylene products and color concentrates and specialty polymers. Competition in the specialty chemical market comes from companies such as IFF, Dow Chemical, and Union Carbide.
