Since its establishment in 1990, the firm has provided market research and analysis and screening services to companies, helping them refine their targeted catalog marketing campaigns to reach the most appropriate audiences and saving them the expense of mailings unlikely to garner sales. Other market research services offered by Abacus Direct include market specific product sales and consumer purchasing reports. Business Week named Abacus Direct among the "100 Best Small Corporations" in both 1997 and 1998. Sales reached $47 million in 1998, a 50% increase over the previous year; net income grew 52% to roughly $11 million; and the number of employees jumped 43% to exceed 220. In June of 1999, Internet-based marketing firm DoubleClick agreed to pay about $1 billion for Abacus. The Broomfield, Colorado-based firm competes with companies such as Acxiom, Experian, and Harte-Hanks.
