Public for four years, Guidant Corporation (NYSE: GDT) posted a 43% increase in sales in 1998. With almost $2 billion in sales, Guidant is an innovator in minimally invasive products and services for treatment of cardiovascular and vascular disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S. Guidant, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, is also a global leader in implantable cardioverter defibrillators. It also manufactures and markets implantable pacemakers. The February 1999 acquisition of Intermedics, with annual pacemaker revenue of $305 million, will double Guidant's share of the pacemaker market. Their corporate strategy of acquisition will continue to tighten its market share. Its purchase of Sulzer Medica's pacemaker and defibrillator business made Guidant the world's second largest manufacturer of cardiac rhythm management equipment.
