It is an education and media company, conducting business through five divisions: education division, cable television division, newspaper publishing division, television broadcasting division, and magazine division. Through its subsidiary Kaplan Inc., the company provides educational services for individuals, schools and businesses in the United States, and Europe. Kaplan's businesses fall into three categories for financial reporting purposes: higher education; test prep and admissions; and professional. In the cable division in late 2008, the company's cable systems served customers in 19 Midwestern, Southern and Western states. Also in 2008 through subsidiaries, the company owned six VHF television stations located in Houston, TX; Detroit, MI; Miami, FL; Orlando, FL; San Antonio, TX; and Jacksonville, FL. In the magazine division, Newsweek, Inc., published Newsweek in the U.S. and in a Europe, Middle East and Africa edition; an Asia edition covering Japan, Korea and south Asia; and a Latin America edition, all of which are in the English language. During 2008, the company's subsidiaries acquired RedHawk Communications Inc. in the U.S.; Hawksmere Limited and Altior Consulting and Training Limited in the U.K.; Foreign Policy magazine and some cable television systems in Mississippi. As of December, 2008, the company's major brands included the Concord Law School, Washington Post, Newsweek and Cable ONE. More
