Description: Walgreen Co. was incorporated in Illinois in 1909 as a successor to a business founded in 1901. Charles Walgreen bought the Chicago drugstore in which he worked as a pharmacist, thus starting the Walgreens chain. In 1922, Walgreens employee, Ivar Coulson, invented the malted milkshake which became an instant classic. Walgreen's stock went public in 1927 and 1931 was the year Walgreens became the first drugstore chain in the country to advertise on the radio, with legendary Chicago Cubs announcer, Bob Elson, as the voice of Walgreens. The company is engaged in the retail sale of prescription and non-prescription drugs and general merchandise. General merchandise includes beauty care, personal care, household items, candy, photofinishing, greeting cards, convenience foods and seasonal items. Customers have prescriptions filled at the drugstore counter as well as through the mail, by telephone and via the Internet. The company's main line of business is prescription sales. Walgreen operates 6,934 locations in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.Retail: Drug store chain.
