Headquartered in Rochester, New York, Frontier Corporation provides a range of integrated telecommunications choices to businesses. They offer Internet, Internet protocol and data applications, long distance and local phone service to business carriers, web-centric and targeted residential customers nationwide and globally. Certain subsidiaries of Frontier were founded as early as 1899. Frontier incorporated in the state of New York in 1920. Through their Integrated Services segment, Frontier is one of the largest long distance providers. Through their Local Communication Services segment which consists of 34 local phone companies, Frontier serves over 1 million access lines in 13 states. It is one of the largest local exchange providers. Frontier Network Systems markets and installs telecommunication systems and equipment. This function was previously performed by South Alabama Cellular Communications and Minnesota Southern Cellular Telephone and Company. These commodities were sold in 1997 and 1998 respectively. Frontier also owns 50% of Frontier Cellular, a wireless joint venture with Bell Atlantic. A merger agreement to allow acquisition of Frontier (NYSE: FRO) by Global Crossing Ltd. was approved in March of 1999. Global Crossings owns and operates the world's first independent global fiber-optic network. Management is hopeful that the merger will create a global, Internet-based, fiber-optic network with the ability to provide one stop shopping for all telecommunications needs.
