Description: Rite Aid Corporation's first store opened in September 1962 as Thrif D Discount Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The company officially changed its name to Rite Aid Corporation in 1968, the same year it was incorporated and it went public on the American Stock Exchange. In 1970, Rite Aid moved to the New York Stock Exchange, trading under the symbol RAD. The company is the largest drugstore chain on the East Coast, and the third largest in the United States based on revenues and number of stores. Rite Aid sells prescription drugs and a wide assortment of other merchandise, including over-the-counter medications, health and beauty aids, cosmetics, household items, beverages, convenience foods, greeting cards, seasonal merchandise. The company also offers photo processing. As of March 2008, Rite Aid operated 5,059 stores in 31 states across the country and in the District of Columbia. In 1999, the company formed a strategic alliance with GNC under which they have opened 1,486 GNC "stores-within-Rite Aid-stores." On June 4, 2007, Rite Aid acquired of all of the membership interests of JCG (PJC) USA, LLC the holding company for the Brooks Eckerd drugstore chain.
