Johnson & Johnson is the world's most comprehensive and broadly-based manufacturer of health care products as well as a provider of related services for consumers, pharmaceutical and professional markets. Founded in 1885 by Robert, James and Edward Johnson with 14 employees on the fourth floor of a small building, the company was formed to enter into the surgical dressing industry. Today, Johnson & Johnson employs approximately 96,000 people in their operations of nearly 190 operating companies in 52 countries around the world. They sell their products in more than 175 countries. During their early years of operation, Johnson & Johnson focused on the manufacture of products that addressed on Sir Joseph Lister's theory that airborne germs were a source of infection in operating rooms. As a result of this focus, they introduced many innovative products such as cotton and gauze dressings that provided antiseptic and sterile quailities. They also introduced a technique that could be used to sterilize catgut sutures. In 1921, they diversified their product line and introduced BAND-AID Brand Adhesive Bandages, one of the best-known and most widely used of all Johnson & Johnson products. Over the past few decades, Johnson & Johnson has experienced continued growth. As individual portions of their business grew, Johnson & Johnson would organize them into individual divisions. For example, Surgikos, Inc. evolved as the manufacture of disposable surgical packs and gowns grew. The Modess Division was formed to handle their sanitary napkin line. New divisions were also formed as new technologies emerges. For instance, Ortho Biotech was formed in 1990 as a biotechnology company. They continue to make strategic acquistions that range from large ones such as DePuy and Neutrogena to many smaller ones. Through acquisitions, of which they have completed 30 in the past decade, Johnson & Johnson has been able to expand upon their product lines. Top competitors include Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck, and Procter & Gamble.
