Description: CSX Corporation's roots date back to the early 19th century when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, known as the B and O, was chartered in 1827. Numerous railroads have combined with the former B and O through merger and consolidation to create what has become CSX. CSX was incorporated in 1978, under Virginia law; its principal operating company is CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSXT). The company's rail and intermodal segments provide rail-based transportation services including traditional rail service and the transport of intermodal containers and trailers. As of December, 2008, included in the rail segment are Total Distribution Services, Inc., Transflo Terminal Services, Inc., CSX Technology, Inc. and other subsidiaries. In the intermodal segment, CSX Intermodal, Inc. is a standalone, integrated intermodal company linking customers to railroads via trucks and terminals. CSX's other holdings include CSX Real Property, Inc. and the Greenbrier Hotel Corporation. The company's rail network serves major population centers in 23 states east of the Mississippi River and the Canadian provinces of Ontario, and Quebec. It serves 70 ocean, river and lake ports along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. In 1980, the company completed the merger of the Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries into CSX. In 1997, CSXT and Norfolk Southern Railway jointly acquired the rights to operate Conrail, Inc. More
