Description: Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation was incorporated in the State of Delaware on December 1994, pursuant to a merger between Burlington Northern Inc. and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation, which occurred in December 1996. Also in December 1996, The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company merged with and into Burlington Northern Railroad Company, and the company changed its name to The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company. In January 2005, The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company changed its name to BNSF Railway Company, which is a holding company that conducts no operating activities and owns no significant assets other than through its interests in its subsidiaries. Through its subsidiaries, the company is engaged primarily in freight rail transportation. The company's freight business operates in four segments: Consumer Products, Industrial Products, Coal and Agricultural Products. As of December 2008, the company's total railway system consisted of approximately 50,000 operated miles of track in 28 states and two Canadian provinces.
