Bruno's operates approximately 150 supermarkets throughout the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Mississippi. The company is struggling from competition and filed for Chapter 11, Bankruptcy in 1998. Bruno operations consist of an upscale market under the banner, Bruno's, discount priced stores, Food World and Food Maxx, and the smaller sized Food Fair stores. Bruno's also runs eight liquor stores next to its Food World locations in Florida. Formerly owned by the Bruno family, the supermarkets are now 82% owned by buyout firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, through Crimson Associates. In 1999, while operating under Chapter 11, the operation had nearly 13,000 employees and annual revenues of $1.8 Billion. Top competitors include, Wal Mart and Winn- Dixie.
