ASARCO is a leading miner, refiner and smelter of nonferrous metals. Of these metals are copper, zinc, and silver which are extracted from United States, Canada and Peru. They account for nearly 75% of the sales generated. Most of ASARCO's silver assets have been traded in exchange to partner, Coeur d'Alene in exchange for a 19% stake in their company. Grupo Mexico, who is 10%-owner and holdings include 54% of a copper-molybdenum mined in Montana, also won a bidding war with copper miner, Phelps Dodge for the company. This happened around the same time that ASARCO merged with Cyprus Amax Minerals and fell apart in 1999. Other ASARCO businesses include American Limestone, and specialty chemicals producer Enthone-OMI. Since December 1998 ASARCO's sales have grown 17.9%. Competitors include Phelps Dodge, Rio Tinto Plc, and Zambia Copper.
