Description: Alabama Power Company was founded by William Patrick Lay in 1906. The company was then organized under Alabama law in 1927 when it was combined with Gulf Electric Company and Houston Power Company. A subsidiary of Southern Company, Alabama Power is engaged in the generation and purchase of electricity and the transmission, distribution, and retail sale of such electricity in over 650 communities (including Anniston, Birmingham, Gadsden, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa) and at wholesale to 15 municipally-owned electric distribution systems and two rural distributing cooperative associations. Alabama Power owns coal reserves near its Plant Gorgas in Parrish, Ala. and uses the output of coal from the reserves in its generating plants. Additionally, Alabama Power sells, and cooperates with dealers in promoting the sale of electric appliances. The company provides the combination of prices, reliable electricity supply and unparalleled service to 1.4 million homes, businesses and industries in the southern two-thirds of Alabama.
