Herman V. Drummond opened his first coal mine in Alabama in 1935. The family still owns the company, now run by his five sons. Today, Drummond is one of the largest, private, independent coal companies in the U.S. The three areas they operate in are coal mining and marketing; coke production and sales; and real estate development. With corporate offices located in Birmingham, Alabama, the company continues to operate out of its original base in Jasper, Alabama. Additional offices and facilities are located in Columbia, Japan, and England. Real Estate developments are under way in California and Florida. Coal mining is the largest area of business with the company operating an underground mine and a surface mine in Alabama. About 6.4 million tons of coal are extracted annually. Through an affiliate, a large, new surface mine is being developed in Columbia, South America. With the acquisition of Alabama By-Products, Drummond opened the ABC Coke Division, now the largest producer of foundry coke in the U.S. Competitors of Drummond Company include CONSOL Energy, Eastern and Ziegler Coal.
