Kohl's ranks as one of the top performing retailers in the country. They operate about 260 family-oriented department stores primarily in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic that feature quality, national brand merchandise priced to provide exceptional value to customers. Kohl's stores sell moderately priced apparel, shoes, accessories and home products targeted to middle-income customers shopping for the families and homes. Kohl's runs a tight operation with few departments than traditional, full-line department stores. The company originated in 1962 when the Kohl family opened its first department store. After selling their food stores and ten department stores to BATUS Retail Group in 1978, Kohl's has experienced phenomenal growth. Between 1978 and 1986, they expanded from 10 to 39 stores throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Then in 1986, Kohl's management purchased the 39 department stores from BATUS and opened their 40th store. In 1988, Kohl's acquired 26 MainStreet stores from Federated Department Stores and in 1992 completed the initial offering of 11.1 million shares. Since 1992, Kohl's has grown t a compound annual growth rate of 22.4 percent per year for sales and 30.4 percent for earnings. They attribute this steady growth in sales and earnings to new store openings. Kohl's short term expansion strategy included opening 40 to 45 stores in 1999 and 50 to 55 stores in 2000. Their plans include expanding into three new markets in 1999 and into the Northeast region in 2000. For the year ended January 30, 1999, net sales increase 20.0% to approximately $3.7 billion with net income increasing approximately 36.0% to $192.3 million. Kohl's reported that their stock prices increased 95% from the end of fiscal 1997 to the end of fiscal 1998. Top competitors include Dayton Hudson, J.C. Penney and Sears.
