Description: Stillwater Mining Co. was founded in 1986 and has been traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange since 1994. The company has been a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Co. since 2003. Stillwater Mining is primarily engaged in the development, extraction, processing, smelting, refining and marketing of palladium, platinum and associated metals from a geological formation in southern Montana known as the J-M Reef. This is the only known significant source of platinum group metals in the United States and one of the significant resources outside Russia and South Africa. Stillwater Mining operates two business segments: mine production and platinum group metals (PGM) recycling. The mine production segment consists of the Stillwater Mine and the East Boulder Mine, and it is engaged in the development, extraction, processing and refining of PGMs. The PGM recycling segment is engaged in the recycling of spent automobile and petroleum catalysts to recover the PGMs contained in those materials.
