The Hartz Group, is best known for its pets and pet supplies, but is also a major real estate developer in New York and New Jersey. Besides these concerns, the Hartz Group owns a number of newspapers, which have a total circulation of about 900,000. The company's founder, Max Stern, emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1926, seeking his fortune across the Atlantic. Stern had lent some money to a pet shop owner in Germany who could pay Stern back only with 5,000 canaries. Stern set out to sell the canaries to recover the money owed him. Stern managed to sell all the birds once he arrived in New York and he used the proceeds from the canaries to found his own business. Over the ensuing decades, Hartz expanded and diversified, becoming a company with over $3 billion in assets by the late 1990s.
