Description: Saks Inc. started as Proffitt's Inc. with five stores in Knoxville, Tennessee. The company was first incorporated in 1919 in Tennessee. In September 1998, Proffitt's and Saks Holdings, Inc. merged and Saks Fifth Avenue. At that time, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th outlet stores became a division of Proffitt's, and the corporate name of Proffitt's was changed to Saks. The company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "SKS" that same month. Saks is a fashion retail organization providing distinctive luxury fashion apparel, shoes, accessories, jewelry, cosmetics and gifts. The company operates 54 Saks Fifth Avenue stores and 48 Off 5th stores in 25 states in the United States. Saks has two distribution facilities in Maryland and California.
