Privately-held Pella Corp. is the world's second-largest manufacturer of wood windows and doors. Founded in 1925 as Rolscreen Co., the company was most widely known for its Rolscreen window screen, which is still popular today. The Rolscreen window screen rolls up and out of sight when not in use. The company became known as Pella Corp. in 1992, when they entered the national retail market with ProLine windows and doors. Today, ProLine products are available from the nation's top building material retailers in more than 800 stores throughout the United States and Canada. Headquartered in Pella, Iowa, the company manufactures all standard Designer Series and Architect Series windows and doors in its 1.5 million-square-foot Pella plant. The fully automated plant, which manufactures all ProLine products, was voted one of the 12 best manufacturing facilities by Industry Week magazine and. Another plant in Shenandoah, Iowa, manufacturers all Pella custom products. The company employs more than 3,500 people nationwide. Pella built a national sales and service organization for its products early in its existence and now includes distributors in every major city in North America as well as internationally.
