National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (Nassco) was founded as a small machine shop in 1905. Now they are the only ship design, construction and repair company on the west coast. Located in San Diego, they build or convert a variety of ships for commercial industries and the Navy. Ships include oil tankers, oceanographic research, combat support ships and ferries. 25% of Nassco's business comes from repairs. Currently, the company is seeking commercial contracts to build several types of ships including trailer ships and cruise ships.
