Starting in 1922 with a food store in Portland, Oregon, the company added general merchandise and apparel in the 1930s. In 1999, Fred Meyer, along with its subsidiaries, was acquired by The Kroger Co., creating the largest grocery company in the U.S. More than 225,000 food and non-food products of both national brand names and private label items are available. Major chains of Fred Meyer are Fred Meyer Marketplace, Ralph's Grocery, Inc, Smith's Food and Drug Centers, and Quality Food Centers. The company also operates Food 4 Less, Foods Co., and Price-Rite warehouse stores. Fred Meyer Jewelers operates over 380 fine jewelry stores in regional malls and in-store outlets in the Marketplace chains. There is a dairy and commercial bakery in the Portland area and the company maintains a large fleet of trucks and trailers along with three major distribution centers.
