Description: Massey Energy Co. was created in 2000 when A.T. Massey's parent company Fluor Corp. completed a reverse spin-off that separated Fluor into two entities: the "new" Fluor Corp. and Fluor Corp., which retained its coal-related businesses and was subsequently renamed Massey Energy Co. The company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange that year. Massey Energy is the largest coal company in Central Appalachia and produces, processes and sells bituminous coal of various steam and metallurgical grades, primarily of a low sulfur content. The customers for its steam coal product include primarily electric power utility companies that use the coal as fuel for their steam-powered generators. Customers for its metallurgical coal include primarily steel producers who use our coal to produce coke, which is, in turn, used as a raw material in the steel manufacturing process. The company has 23 processing and shipping centers, many of which receive coal from multiple mines. As of early 2009, Massey Energy operated 66 mines, including 46 underground mines (two of which employ boom and pillar and longwall mining) and 20 surface mines (with 11 highwall mines in operation) in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.
