Since the 1960s, Irvine has followed its plans to build a several large communities on Irvine Ranch, in Orange County California. Irvine Ranch consists of about 120,000 acres of land that runs 22 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Irvine's commercial centers include Irvine Spectrum located in Southern California's technology region and the company also owns properties in Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and San Diego. The company's communities provide housing for about 200,000 people and office space for 250,000 people. James Irvine and two others bought Irvine Ranch 1864 and Irvine bought his partners' shares in 1876. Irvine's son, James Irvine II, incorporated the property holdings in 1894 as The Irvine Company. The land was used for agriculture until the 1960s, when increasing urbanization forced the company to consider converting the land to residential and commercial property. The company decided to do so in a systematic way, giving rise to the strategic develop of several communities on the Irvine Ranch. In 1983, homebuilder Donald Bren purchased a majority share of the company and in 1996 Bren redeemed all outstanding shares, becoming the exclusive owner of the company.
