Great Lakes Cheese Company sells more than 25 types of domestic cheese and a small selection of cheeses imported from Europe. Swedish immigrant Hans Epprecht, now president and CEO of the company, founded Great Lakes in 1959 in Cleveland as a distribution company. Epprecht still owns a majority of the company. Today, through operations in Ohio, Wisconsin, and New York, the company purchases both natural and process cheese from U.S. and foreign producers, packages it, and distributes it, mostly for the private label market. In addition, the company sells some of its own cheese under the Great Lakes brand name, including award-winning soft Italian and cheddar. The manufacturer and commodity marketer also offers cheeses for bulk and food service sales. Great Lakes Cheese's competition includes Land O'Lakes, Schreiber Foods, and ConAgra.
