Flying J operates 125 service plazas across the United States catering to the needs of motorists, particularly truck drivers. The largest diesel fuel retailer in the country, the company manages gas and oil reserves in several Western states and operates an oil refinery in Utah. Flying J is anticipating expansion throughout North America. Besides fuel, the enormous service plazas offer such amenities as vehicle repair and maintenance, car and truck washes, restaurants, convenience stores, and hotels. Catering to long-distance truck drivers, the plazas provide showers, TV lounges, telephone services (including portable phones, in some locations), scales, and game rooms. The company is also installing kiosks with mileage and routing information and fax and copy services. In January of 1999, Flying J began a joint venture with L.W. Miller Transportation, Inc. The new corporation, Fleet Sales, LLC, will market used heavy-duty trucks and equipment, maintaining more than 350 trucks pulling tankers, refrigerated vans, and livestock trailers.
