Carpenter Co. was formed in 1948 by E. Rhodes Carpenter as a distributor of foam rubber. Today, headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, the company is a worldwide manufacturer of polyurethane chemicals and foam, processed polyester fiber, along with other related products. Since 1956 the company has manufactured flexible foam specifically for home furnishings. In fact, Carpenter's Powell Plant is a recognized leader in the field of urethane chemistry. Some products include padding under carpet, filler for sofa cushions and bedding. Carpenter's Chemical Systems Division develops, and also manufactures polyurethane liquid systems used as insulation, tire fill, and packaging material. Carpenter tire products are distributed to industrial tire dealers to sell and are designed to prevent flat tires. The Automotive Division has been an essential part of Carpenter since 1966. The company has facilities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Competition includes Foamex, Sealed Air and Trace International Holdings.
