Description: Arch Coal Inc. organized in Delaware in 1969 as Arch Mineral Corp. In July 1997, the company merged with Ashland Coal Inc. Arch Coal is one of the largest coal producers in the United States. The company sells substantially all of their coal to power plants, steel mills and industrial facilities. Arch Coal uses two primary methods of mining coal: surface mining and underground mining. The company operates three reportable business segments, which are based on the low-sulfur coal producing regions in the United States in which they operate: the Powder River Basin, the Western Bituminous region and the Central Appalachia region. Arch Coal operates 20 active mines located at 11 mining complexes throughout the United States. In 2008, the company sold coal to domestic customers located in 35 different states and exported coal to customers located in 21 countries in North America, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.
